In 1766, Toiroa Ikariki, a tohunga from Nukutaurua, Māhia, had a vision that foretold the arrival of strangers and a time of darkness in Tūranga.

Toiroa drew his prophecy in the sand depicting the arrival of Cook and the Endeavour, strangers with red or white skin, and also Arikirangi, still to be born.

Originally commissioned for Tuia 250 and redesigned in full colour for Collision 2.0 by artist Taupuru Whakataka Brightwell (Ariki Arts) this design depicts the prophecy of Toiroa and marks the beginning of our Collision story.
